And to travel to which nation, after much admonition, seven fluent persons, all freemen, presented themselves, named and employed as follows:
Cristiaen Jansz van Hoesum, free gunner, deckhand and loader, first leader, and accepted as head by the rest, and promised to accept the expedition for it.
Jochum Elbertsz - of Amsterdam, free Sardanahavaarder (sic.), Hans Jacobsz Liskij of Dansicq, free servant of the vendor, Pieter Jansz of Middelburch, free servant of the miller, Gysbert Arentsz of Bommel, free mason, Dircq Renskes of Maseijck, free coremaijder, Jan Francken of Arnhem, corporal in Comps. service.
This is what the Commander and the Council, after deliberation and further reading of the order of the Honourable Commissioner van Goens, has confirmed, as a follow-up to it, by Our Lords Masters from the Patria in their latest letter from 1762. of the 16th of April last, found it good and ordered to accept the offer of the aforementioned free connoisseurs and to have them travel on Monday or Tuesday the following day, and for that purpose to accommodate all necessary provisions and necessities at the Company's expense, besides two of the best oxen to carry their belongings so that they might stay away longer, besides a promise of such a premium as the items to be found will be found to merit the E. Company, in accordance with the authorization of the said Ed. per the aforementioned letter sent to us, which they accepted with the intention, if possible, not to return until they had found the Namanas or others, and hoping that the Almighty would please find something good for the Holy Company to relieve them of the heavy burdens they bear here, etc., for which there is great confidence, and that these aforementioned people are good, young, fresh fellows who have often been in this country and have lived in the Company's service and freedom at this Captain's for several years, and are therefore deemed the best and most suitable for this purpose.
Thus done and arrested in the Fort of Good Hope on the date and year as mentioned above.
