English translation

The lecture of the writings against the skipper of the flute ship Harp, Conwalles, having been delivered by the assistant or guide Joost de Vos, had been heard several times by the Commander and Council of the fort de Goede Hoope, alongside which he and his supporters were complained about and subsequently heard several times, during which various absurdities and debauches of drunkenness, etc. were mentioned, increasing the same. which would have been done by the skipper, during their departure, against which the skipper's note of what had happened to the table guests and other officers was likewise read over several times: as well as besides all the same many and various persons of the. ship interrogated, Item also ocular inspection and close remarq on various its compartments, And as one and the other could endure so much time, seen that the skipper Conwalles aforesaid was more than befits such a qualified person, doused in brandy, but that the chief bull, Yes so clever, if he can only get strong drink, which then also cannot stop for 4 or 5 days, and being the master of the same, apparently always walks with a drunken head, so one hardly knows which of the two is the best in that case, according to the confession even of the aforementioned skipper, and all the other officials, whose 609 complaints in principle but about the aforementioned skipper's treatment is indecent, with the assurance that he himself is impeccable in his seamanship and navigational skills. Therefore, since there is no material here, nor any ships at long last, of which one could make a change in order to appoint another skipper or helmsman, the Council cannot approve of making any changes in the aforementioned two highest and most necessary qualities of the aforementioned ship; but understand to discreetly maintain the skipper as head in his commanded sight (already somewhat degenerated by usurpation), also in degrees the more advanced or lesser officers as well as the pilot as second in the council, and also the chief and second mate etc., to admonish them that they will have to help cover up the sleights in the skipper's place and to divulge the blunders (from which the chief mate is also not exempt) among the people, and to oppose those with which the dragon is stabbed (as would have happened according to their documents), in order to maintain the proper discipline and to respect the commanded sight of the authorities, and with Strength must be maintained, as this is a very necessary matter on such long voyages for the safety of the Company's ship and loaded goods, as well as human life and limb.

And since it has also been noted that the aforementioned pilot, with somewhat more than ordinary authority assumed against the skipper, has taken some rather generous measures regarding French and Spanish wines, together with the aforementioned chief pilot and other guests; Which the skipper (as it seems to be) would have liked to have had somewhat less of, but in the aforementioned case, he was unable to ward off. Therefore, he has also been admonished in particular not to oppose the skipper any longer in such a pressing matter, but to help maintain everything reasonably, and, according to the order of the Masters, to keep proper and close track of consumption, as the skipper (apart from his own debauchery) has done all reasonable well and has shown us.

But in order that the sailors might proceed with less unrest and, with God's help, arrive at Batavia in better peace of mind and without more commotion or crackle, this following table and the cajuijtsgasten &a have also been approved. (for the most treacherous and at least relevant to the ship's management) to be changed and kept here until the nearest ships, so that they may then follow suit, namely:

And since the ship's butler of the same flute ship, named Cornelis Fransz de Graeff, has so far offended that he laid hands on and struck the bowman Joost de Vos, etc., it is understood that he shall be condemned, under penalty of the same, as in this case, to be let fall from the hull three times and to be struck before the mast with one hundred blows, in addition to a fine of 20 shillings, to be applied as appropriate, and after the aforementioned penalty has been executed, to be taken ashore and held in custody for a period of time. to be paid, until the aforementioned fine has been paid, in order to then continue sailing with the ship as bottler, and to be able to give reason for the lack of some barrels of Rhine wine, loaded in Batavia according to the Company's invoices for their Ed., in which our high authority will determine the further course of the matters between the ship per and the bouchhouder mentioned above nor (being untouched) remains reserved.611

Thus done and arrested in the Fort of Good Hope on the day and year as above.
