Therefore, it has been deemed acceptable to offer it to the married ministers of the E. Compe. As the citizens living around the fort, and mostly being craftsmen, have a good opportunity to make a living, and therefore farmers are not yet permitted to keep dairy cattle, since farmers incur significant costs and labor and would be unable to survive without dairy cows and sheep, etc., because they also need manure for their land.558
It is finally understood and agreed to transfer the aforementioned Comps. of pigs on the aforementioned conditions to the following persons in number and for a price, namely:
3 sows full of young at 7 1/2 guilders. Selected by Wouter Cornelisz Mostert, a free miller and stone cutter, married and living here at the fort with his wife.
1 sow, the same full of young, at 7 1/2 guilders, selected by Hendricq van Zurwurden, a free clothmaker, also married and living at the fort. 21 sows and boars, all the rest small and large, sick and healthy, lame and lame, so that they go and stand with Jannetjen Boddijs, wife of the sargeant of this fortress,559 provided that among these 21 pieces is included and promised to her, the first Dutch sow that will overcome with the ships from the homeland without young, because all the refuge is bad and small good, accepting for 4 guilders each by mutual agreement, on the condition that none of them will for the time being be allowed to fatten and slaughter annually like a pig for their own household: but for the time being everything is bound to the E. Compe. To be delivered fattened at the price set for the date, and mentioned above, at the time of breeding, it will be so abundant that more will be available, as it is hoped and trusted that this means of breeding will be better than before and will first be used for this purpose.
And so that the pigs do not suffer any damage in Comps. If the freemen or private gardeners could do anything, the owners shall ensure that they always wear a three-cornered fence (brought to the E. Compe) around their necks, so that they cannot walk through any hedges, on penalty of 12 stuivers as a protection fee for the perpetrator,560 and compensation for the damage to the pigs, provided that each person also has to weave or pave their gardens so tightly and strongly that the pigs, with the fences around their necks, will not be able to walk in or out.
And so did the freeman Wouter Cornelisz Mostert of Utrecht (who lived with Jan Reijniersz in Compe), since the compste of the... Jan Reijniersz, wife of the same, has now separated, but has left with him all the dairy cows, oxen, wagon, plough, harrows and furthermore everything that belongs to the cultivation of corn, butter, milk, & such, except only half (being 7 stuccos) of the Dutch sheep, which he himself has no intention of going alone, because he is knowledgeable about grinding grits and flour and accordingly requests that he be granted the smouldering horse meat: to grind all the flour and grits under reasonable conditions with his own servants and slaves for the convenience of the E. Compe. and freemen and in accordance with that, firstly 4 or more suitable trecks, together with such more as he might need to begin and carry out his work. ese.
On which the Council concludes that at least three men can be excused in the mill who managed to keep an eye on the sample taken afterward. Just reason with the little spoiled grain from the Patria, which is still only very little to grind, and has been found to be good, since it no longer works as it should, as the strainers are pressed with rigor, besides that it also easily causes the stones to become spoiled or not set properly, etc., how much nonsense, etc., one finds in many cases with some Comps. ministers subject, mainly where one cannot always be present, besides the fraud which moreover often enough also occurs grossly enough. It is noted that the aforementioned Wouter Cornelisz is a respectable and down-to-earth man and is currently also married to a diligent woman (at least so it seems), who seems to want to continue for the E. Compe. It is considered necessary to transfer the mill to him, and therefore, until the further approval of our Lord Masters from the Fatherland, we have agreed with him on the following condition: namely, that he will have two stuivers for his rye or wheat milled, and one stuiver per bushel for malt, plus one pound per bushel, for the pollen.
Regarding the grits, research will continue until the harvest, in order to determine whether it will be dried without the sun, or whether the barley, like in the fatherland, will also have to be dried during the harvest, as this would make a significant difference in the consumption of bran.
And firstly, to the wheat and rye, etc. In order to keep all this in the power of the Company, and to exclude as much as possible all peculiarities in the grains, the same has been expressly ordered not to grind for anyone, be they freemen or other, for the time being, since, according to the conditions entered into with the European Company, all wheat and rye are bound to the European Company. to deliver in order to then fetch their bread flour from there again, and to see that initially no more is consumed than each will need for their subsistence, in order not to squander and waste too much uselessly on some of their acquaintances on the ships, as already harmful examples have become apparent of this, and whereby this place is continually deprived of their own means of survival; furthermore, the Company's aim is made all the more burdensome to furnish the ships arriving here with fresh bread and barley, etc., and why for the time being no other backers will be allowed than those for the E. Company. will be back, at the time when the grain becomes so abundant that the E. Company will be able and permitted to spare it without any inconvenience, etc.
Furthermore, regarding the mill, the miller will first be responsible for all the goods belonging to the kiln, building, and ware chests, etc., all of which must first be prepared and brought to the hall. He will then hold all of these, as well as his own oxen, servants, slaves, etc., at his own expense and risk. He will also be liable for any misfortune of fire, whether it should break or cause damage to the mill, arising from within or within the mill, although the E. Company will retain the mill as its own. as well as the lofts for storing grain, made up above, including the millstones, which he will use, including the first, the bolt, the sifter, and the chests, along with all that belongs to it. However, as mentioned, any breakage and all repairs will remain his responsibility, in addition to the damage from fire, etc., so that he can better manage the damage, etc.
And since the aforementioned Wouter Cornelisz Mostaert is also a good stone, tile and pancake maker, and the grinding will initially require little effort, since, like564 aforementioned, only a little groundcorn from the Netherlands can be ground at present, and according to which it will only begin to be used for firing a year and a day later, then he is also permitted to set up a stone kiln; provided that the stone is good and hard enough according to the standard (to be taken by a committee from the Council), 8 inches long, 4 inches wide and 2 inches thick; as well as to deliver the same, namely the E. Compe. for 5 guilders per thousand, but it may be sold among citizens for 6 guilders.
And regarding the tiles for roofing houses, the price will be determined after first inspection.
Furthermore, in all cases, all such further impositions and rights as our Lords and the authorities here may deem appropriate, upon approval of their Honor, shall be subject to any subsequent deliberations on one or the other.
Thus done and resolved in the Fort of Good Hope on the date and year as above.
