Jan Sacharias of Amsterdam, young man and free citizen here, aged 27 years, having entered into a marriage vow with the542 young daughter Maria …543 born in Bengal, aged 20 years, former slave of the sick comforter Pieter van der Stad, and by the aforementioned Jan Sacharias544 bought free for that purpose, according to a conveyance of free coping shown to us today, which, together with the others, requests to be legally confirmed in the Holy Real State, So, at the Council of this fortress (having been able to learn no other than that both were free and liberal persons, with whom, according to her own declaration, she had no dealings with anyone in the world regarding this matter, as well as certifying that the aforementioned Maria had the Dutch language not only fully understands but also speaks clearly, and having a reasonable knowledge of Christ according to the Reformed religion,545 understands, to grant these young people their reasonable request, and to that end to have their first appointment made on the first Sunday following the Christian sermon, and likewise every Sunday until the third inclusive, so that after the last proclamation and the sermon (no legal reason for impediment being forthcoming), the Secretary of our Council (since we have no minister) may conduct the solemnization for all the people in open council chamber546 and proceed with faithful public service.
