The interpreter, Doman, alias Anthonij, bravely appeared before us to apprehend a certain person of Herrijs's people, who had some time ago stolen and driven away the fourteen missing sheep, so that they might go out with Caepman's people. He fetched the Swartemans, and at the same time fully demonstrated that he was of Caepman's and Eva of Herrijs's people (although her mother lived in Caepman's camp), as each fiercely supported his own party and burdened the other with everything,516 so that now we will also be able to find the rightful man who murdered the boy five years ago517 and stole the animals of the E. Compe., etc.
And at which incidents the chief merchant Willem Bastincq was also present: as well as by us of matters which you have informed as much as the correctness of the time has been able to bring, the Council has understood with His E. advice to also place the aforesaid person of Herrij (called Jan Cout) in custody with the other from yesterday, so that the Caepmans would not think that we have one leg like the other,518 in view of the fact that our Dom also affirms that Herrij's people laugh and make fun of Caepman (who is being detained alone), which they seem to regret very much and which could well cause a rupture between them (jealousy being enough) to be able to know from one what the other has on us may always intend &a., and by this means keep them both in alliance as from now on, according to time and case convenience, to the greatest advantage of the E. Willem Bastincq), and subsequently due consideration and much deliberation was made; having also fully noticed that they place a great deal of importance on the aforementioned hostesses, in addition to the fact that they now also seem very obedient in meeting us in everything and yielding sufficiently to the rod,520 which they also fully affirm to us of the Gorochauqua (persevering), yes, that everyone will offer almost all his cattle for ransom, as this speech already begins, plus such conditions more as we ourselves almost desire, and through which, if it happens, we will receive them under such devotion (while always keeping hostesses), be it one continuous, or by changing for some time, at least from the principal, that by this means one could reach the objective of bestiality, which was why one had otherwise speculated to make cuts and trenches, for which purpose.
