English translation

The time of the 25th of January has already passed by 5 days, before which, in accordance with the resolution of the 7th of this same month of January, it was decided not to allow the ships Arnhem and Honingen to depart, for reasons arising therefrom, and therefore summoned today by the Commander, together with the Council of this fort, that of the Broad Council of the aforementioned ships and the yacht Maria, as well as proposed because to date no ships have arrived from the Patria to furnish the aforementioned two necessary costal ships, which in the present case is to the best of the E. Compe. to be done, and further offered to have as much cargo shipped as the necessary ship Arnhem might require, and also another 3000 lb. to light bread from the yacht Maria, besides as much rice from the fort's storehouse as would enable Woningen to make the journey. After much deliberation it has been decided that, since meat, which is very scarce here and since the warm season is salted, would not be able to endure well, it is not to venture into adventure with it, but to wait with the departure of these ships until one or more of the autumn ships from the Patria will arrive here, since Arnhem, because of its necessities for most things, cannot be helped from the fort's provisions: as the fort is only furnished at present with no more than 200 lb. of bread, 4 lasts of rice, 5 barrels of barley, 1 do. meat, 1 steak of bacon, 2 half-sized olives, 1 steak of half a legger of ash, and 1 anchor of wine at the highest point.

So that only the Slodt van Hooningen could be helped with the rice to depart alone, but this (ventilated in Rade) did not want to pass due to the price and that it was also against the wishes and the order of the Ed. The Lords are vying to allow such a costly ship to sail alone, since their iterative orders to India are always to have the return ships arrive annually in a combined manner at the port of our country (if possible). Regarding the ship Hooningen's departure, it was the only one that remained there, especially since all the onset of the day was expected from both India and the Netherlands, and there are rumors that ships were heard ashore, and during this meeting with cannon, several shots were heard from the sea.

Furthermore, at the request of Andries Blaeuw, the ship arrived from Amsterdam with the ship Oliphandt. 1652 for thirdwaeck, later advanced in India to understudy with 30 gl. monthly and currently by death and vacation on the ship Arnhem surrogated to the office of chief pilot, which since 23rd August last has satisfactorily professed, according to additional testimony of the chief captains of the same ship, and that therefore he has made himself worthy of confirmation with good services and impeccable commodities, Therefore, at his request and required competence, the same is confirmed by this one in the aforementioned capacity of chief pilot and, according to the rule of the general article-brieff, after the order of Our Lords Masters, 40 guilders is added by halving of salary449. Monthly, commencing on August 23rd, the aforementioned chief pilot's place was observed on the aforementioned ship Arnhem.

Thus done and resolved in the Fort of Good Hope, date as above.
