And having taken this into consideration by the Council, it is now quite possible, even at this early stage, that with the aforementioned smallest yacht, a further voyage to the aforementioned Angola could be made before the largest yacht, Hasselt van Arder from the Bay of Guinea with slaves, could land here, since with this latest voyage it has also been further established that one can navigate this coast from Africa to Angola, including the coast, both there and again, easily and very readily.
And we also have no further order as yet aforesaid on the employment of the aforesaid yachts of her Ed. aforesaid, since the autumn ships have not yet arrived, and to make arrangements for Madagascar is also four months too early, besides that her Ed. has been on that traffic to deliberate further beforehand whether it will be advisable to resume the Madagascar voyage &a. that the aforementioned yacht, waiting for one thing and another, would have to remain here for a while at sea. It was therefore understood that instead of that, it should first be made sail again (as their Ed. had previously ordered in this case of such temporary recovery of both yachts): in order to make another voyage to Angola before laying up, or perhaps in the meantime. hunting with slaves from there might be obtained, with orders to also visit and call at all ports from below Saldanha Bay, as far as Cabo Negro, Negra and Vliege Bay 444, or as much further, including as is suspected, that the Portuguese have no permanent residence, and to investigate everywhere whether one might find, in the opinion of many, any slaves or other trade above Angola, especially of skins, turtle shell, rice, milk and other durable grain for food in this place, since no more grain has been harvested here this first season, as it will be necessary to sail again in the near future, and for which it has also been found good to do a to make ready a cargo: as well as to have the yacht manned with 30 guns, taking from it 17 men, namely 7 who were manned more and another 10 taken over from Hasselt, and mounted with another 4 guns, namely 2 3-pounders445 from the fort and 2 English 6-pounders from Robben Island, to which another 6-pounder from the fort will be brought in its place, so that the said yacht will then be mounted with 12 guns to also be sufficient to capture a reasonable Portuguese prince near and around Angola, to which end (no trade above the kingdom of slaves or anything else heard) it is understood that it will be sent off, or perhaps for Loango St. Neither Poulo nor I could acquire anything for the purpose of this voyage: to return from there via St. Helena back again, and by the way to learn what ships of the E. Compe. de Cape might have arrived there, in order to take over any from them, if any such ship might have been sent to the Cape as provisions or cargo for the slave trade in Guinea from Batavia, and for which purpose it is understood to authorize the skipper and chief captains of the aforementioned yacht to have all the letters from the E. Compe. The Governor-General and Councillors of India have written to the Commander and Councillors here to inquire what these ships will have to requisition, etc. All of which, with God's blessing, is hoped to be completed before May, and more of the Maria yachts will be returned here, mostly from Hasselt at the same time as Guinea, or even for the same purpose, in order to then, according to the orders of our Lords and Masters, both of them will be deployed in such advances as their Honour will send us further instructions to dictate.
And since the seal yacht (built here) is very suitable and a straight shot for sailing in and out of all inlets, according to which very would be serious, in addition to the yacht Maria (since she is sailing smoothly and well), and it is also understood that there are sufficient skippers and seafarers to make the aforementioned voyage with Maria to and from Angola. Therefore, it was decided to have her made sail and to have a crew of six sailors in order (because there was fear of shallow waters with the yacht Maria, etc.) to first explore all the bays and inlets.446 And also to be of service to the aforementioned yacht Maria, etc.
Furthermore, the skipper of the aforementioned yacht, Maria, having proposed the surrogacy of the following individuals in higher positions, and that they have made their confirmation worthy through good service and courtesy, it is understood that, in accordance with the rule of the general article, the following correction should be made, namely:
Louris Pietersz of Malmuije, who arrived here in the Netherlands with the yacht Maria in 1657, was paid 24 guilders per month for chief boatswain, which the chief helmsman's place is on th. The yacht, which has sailed from here to Angola since September 10th, was confirmed as helmsman at his request and due to his suitability, primarily due to the skipper's good testimony, and was subsequently granted a halving of his wages, amounting to 36 guilders per month, effective today.
Pieter Hansz van Dansicq, who arrived here in 1657 with the yacht Maria, paid 14 guilders for the boatman's mate, which has since been the subject of the boatman's berth. The amount, as above, is granted a halving of 19 guilders per month, effective today. Jan Hendricxsz van de Wormer, who arrived here as above for a forestry fee of 12 guilders, which the boatman's mate's place has occupied since the aforementioned period, is allocated by halving 14 guilders per month, effective today.
Brother Andriesz van Medenblick, who arrived here as above for a carpenter's mate at 39 guilders per month, which the carpenter's place has occupied since the aforementioned period, is also allocated by halving 40 1/2 guilders per month for the carpenter's mate, effective today.
Thus done and resolved in Fort de Goede Hoope on the day and year as above.
