And as it has been learned that some of the freemen are chopping down and violating the wood in the forest with great irregularity through their houses and sheds (making them themselves), it has been deemed good to warn and prohibit this, as has been done by decree herein that they, as well as the free carpenters who have only accepted 3 years' freedom, will henceforth refrain from chopping any wood from the Comps. or from the aforementioned 2 free woodcutters in their forest, small or large, on penalty of 6 Ra. and compensation for the damage; But they will be allowed to obtain their provisions from other forests (provided they are sufficient) outside the aforementioned thickets, at any time as otherwise ordered. However, the aforementioned carpenters will not be allowed to cut wood for themselves in any forest at any time, and they will not concern themselves with anything other than building houses from wood provided by their masters, with which they will contract to build houses, and which is previously cut from the thickets.
It has also been considered good practice to also prohibit the exchange of elephant teeth, renocheros horns, ostrich feathers, or any other rags, whatever they may be called and under whatever pretext, at 10 Ra. A fine, since only a small amount of it is being imposed and is becoming increasingly noticeable, causing such a great hindrance to the animal trade. According to the order of the Honourable Commissioner Van Goens, they are permitted and recommended to exercise as much as they can within the established rules and regulations: to keep oxen and cows in abundance, which is of the greatest importance to the common good. Everyone, in addition to these, is warned above to guard against damage and to promote their greatest profit from the agricultural and livestock trade in principle.
Thus done and resolved in the Fort of Good Hope on the day and the year as above, together with an extract from here, pronunchiated and approved on the 7th and the next.
