The Noble Lord Governor, having presented to the meeting a certain letter from the High Government of January 20th of this year (45), and in addition an extract from the general resolution of the Castle of Batavia of the 15th of the previous month, which arrived today by the frigate Geelvink, recommending to us, among other things, by the aforementioned letter, that we order the ships of this year's next of kin, namely the aforementioned The frigate Geelvink, the Vegt, and the Voetboog, should not needlessly detain themselves upon their arrival here, but rather, having been provided with all necessary provisions and refreshments as soon as possible, should begin their journey to the Fatherland, without waiting for anything, unless we had received some further order from our Majors here, so that these could then be promptly followed up with us, furthermore, in the aforementioned extract, noting that their Highness, after due consideration, had kindly understood that each of the said return ships would be permitted to do its best to first obtain this Cab, furthermore to His Honor. and leaving this Council deferred, because of presupposition of the said order, as if, likewise, no news or apparent rumours of difficulties and an impending rupture in Europe had reached us, then we should have done the aforementioned. the Geelvink hunt, which, according to all appearances, was to appear here first and ahead of the other two ships, would proceed further to the fatherland as soon as possible, either together with Meresteijn and Overrijp, as well as the Ceylon return ships, if they or any of them might be encountered by the aforementioned ship here, or only if, for the sake of its sailing, proceeding ahead could be advantageous in terms of time, without delaying it according to the first-mentioned whistles, the Vegt and Voetboogh; but hereinafter consultation had been brought to order how that the latest national order of the 6th of October 1699 and where to His Highness, as aforementioned, is, please point out to us, expressly dictating that we must let the return ships sail as early as possible after having enjoyed refreshments, and let the other ships follow in combination when they are two or more strong, and so on down to the last one: Besides that the Gentlemen our Majores also clearly commanded in their previous orders of November 2, 1686, that we will not let a ship depart alone,46 unless it were the last, and not otherwise: And in addition, taking into account how the skipper of the Geelvink, Albert Hendricx Coops, because of the health of his crew and the limited supply of firewood and water, has certainly determined that in the time of three days will again be able to sail, provided he is also provided with some refreshments for the voyage; Thus, the matter has been well considered and thoroughly considered, and in particular, the aforementioned orders have been reflected upon, provided, for the sake of the E. Heer Gouverneur ter vergadering voorgedraagen hebbende seekere missive van de Hooge Regeeringe van den 20n Januarij deses jaars45 en daar benevens nogh een extract uijt de generaale resolutie des Casteels Batavia van den 15n do. daer te vooren per het fregat de Geelvink heden overgekomen, ons onder andren, bij voors. missive recommandeerende dat wij de scheepen deser jaarsse-naebesendinge, te weten het voors. fregat de Geelvink , de Vegt en de Voetboog bij verschijninge alhier, niet noodloos soude hebben op te houwden, maar liever soo spoedigh als doenlijk van alle nodige behoeften en ververssinge versien sijnde, haer reijs nae ‘t Patria te laaten onderneemen, sonder nergens nae te wachten, of ten waere wij alhier eenige naardere ordre van de Heeren onse Majores ontfangen hadden, omme die als dan prompt bij ons opgevollicht te werden, mitsgrs. verder ook bij het voors. extract kennisse gevende, als dat haar hoog Edlens. nae genomen overlegh hadden gelieven te verstaan ijder der geseijde retourscheepen te permitteeren sijn best te mogen doen om eerst dese Caab sien te gewinnen, wijders aen sijn Edle. en desen Raad gedefereert latende, omme op praesuppositie der geseijde ordres, als van gelijcken ook soo ons niet eenige tijdinge ofte schijnbaare gerughten van swarigheeden en een aanstaande rupture in Europa waren toegekomen, dat wij als dan ‘t voors. jacht de Geelvink ‘t welck nae alle apparentie alhier eerst en voor de andre twee bodems stond te verschijnen, op het spoedighste verder na het vaderland souden laaten voortgaan ‘t zij te samen met Meresteijn en Overrijp , als ook van de Ceijlonsse retourscheepen, indien deselve of eenige van dien door gemelte bodemtie alhier nogh mogten werden beloopen, dan wel alleen indien maar om desselfs beseijlentheijt met voor uijt te gaan, omtrent den tijd voordeel soude connen doen, sonder ‘t selve nae de eerst genoemde fluijten de Vegt en Voetboogh op te houden: maar hier tegens in overlegh gebragt sijnde hoe dat de jonghste vaderlandse ordre van den 6n October ao. 1699 en waar heen haar hoogh Edlens. als voors. is, ons gelieven te wijsen, wel expresselijk sijn dicteerende dat wij de retourscheepen, wanneer ses of meer sterck sijn, nae genooten ververssinge soo vroegh als doenelijk is, moeten doen zeijlgaan, laatende de andere scheepen g’combineert volgen, wanneer die twee of meer sterck sijn, en dat soo vervolgens tot de laatste toe: Behalven dat ook de Heeren onse Majores bij haere anterieure ordres van den 2 November 1686 wel duijdelijk gebieden dat wij een schip alleen niet sullen laaten vertrecken,46 ten waere dat het laatste moghte wesen, en anders niet: En waar beneven ook gelet, hoe dat den schipper van de Geelvink , Albert Hendricx Coops, vermits de gesondheijt van sijn volck en weijnigh benodigheijt van brandhoud en water seekerlijk vasteld dat hij in den tijd van drie daagen wederom in staat sal sijn om te konnen zeijlen, mits hem voor de reijse ook eenige ververssinge werden bijgeset; Soo is dan de saak wel ingesien en rijpelijk overwogen sijnde, en insonderheijt ook mede gereflecteert op de hier voor geciteerde ordres, mitsgs. de delatie van wel gemelte haar hoogh Edlens. deswegen aan ons gelaten, ten meeste dienste van d’ E.Compe. consonantelijk verstaan en geresolveert ‘t meergeseijde fregat de Geelvink niet alleen te laaten vaaren, maar liever de reijse van de meergeme. retourscheepen Meresteijn en Overrijp , althans op het monsteren zeijlvaardigh leggende, voor drie maal vierentwintich uuren te prolongeeren, en ‘t voors. fregat over dagh en nagt van sijn benodigt brandhout en vars water mitsgrs. genoeghsaame vervarssinge voor de reijs te versien, omme als dan te samen en g’combineert de reijse uijt dese Taefelbhaij nae de havenen onses lieve vaderlands te vervolgen.47
