English translation

The following request is presented by the following suppliers, with the following words:

'Aen d' Ed. Lord My Lord Joan van Riebeeck Commander of 't Fort de Goede Hoope &a. aen d' Caep de Boa Esperance:'

'Distinguished with all due respect, and due respect to Abraham Gabbema and Gerrit Ralant, how they are Suppliers by order of you Ed. A client orders his services to be taken into account for his pay comptoire, but as is customary in India, those who are employed in writing are entitled to enjoy it, trusting it to his own Ed. to be aware, and as if the suppliers themselves could not reach it before you Ed. to have consent to do so, although they have not yet done any services to the petitioners, worthy of their regard, but hoping (if God the Lord grants them health and life to earn it), that the petitioners turn to You, diligently requesting and praying Your Honor that You I beg her to favor and endow her with the aforementioned allowance, upon the promise that the petitioners will treat her as honorable persons should and are obligated to do, which, according to the signature of ABRAHAM GABBEMA and GERRIT RALANT.316

In view of the fact that the same reasonable hand of writing, etc., and that it had been collected due to a defect in the scribes or copiers of Princess Royael and Vogelsangh, since that time here at the pay-office, as otherwise used and found to be of good diligence, etc., it is understood that the petitioners to grant the request, and to allow them, from the beginning of February, to also receive, according to Indian custom, the ordinary assistant's allowance and subsidy, on the trust that they, as honest servants, will bear the more diligently in their service for the Holy Company.

And in order that one here and another would not have to look for their food on their own and some from others, but that they might be treated to something better and in finer order than has been possible up to now for their food money, it has also been approved to let them eat at a general table after the Batavian manner, under the supervision of the bookkeeper Roeloff de Man, together with him and the assistant Caspar van Weede, in order that everything may go smoothly, that for the service of the table and kitchen etc., one of Comps. will be added according to Indian custom. The boys and table goods, as appropriate, as well as all their food, cooked and roasted by the Commander's cook, who must cook for the sick, and this for the aforementioned four breasts of the pen without delay, with a companion.

And to store and seal their butter, cheese, olive oil, vinegar, table goods, etc., a suitable casket or box will be provided, as well as a portion of the food money, butter, cheese, etc. For dessert, a glass of wine may sometimes be left over for comfort and relief, with which (also in accordance with Batavian customs, as mentioned above) it will be supplemented with fairly hard bread, barley, peat, and stockfish, in order to maintain a fine, honest table and meal.

Thus done and resolved in the Fort of Good Hope on the date and year as above.
